How Far Can a Private Jet Fly Nonstop? Range by Aircraft Category
How far a private jet can fly nonstop depends almost entirely on its size class. To put real numbers on it, we analyzed every one of our 702 charter routes (built from public-domain OurAirports data across 27 business-aviation airports) against the published planning range of six standard business-jet categories. For each route and each category we asked one question: can that class cover the great-circle distance nonstop, with fuel reserves? The tables below are the result — a citable reference for how aircraft range maps onto actual trips.
A light jet's ~1,800 nm nonstop range covers 270 of 702 sample routes (38%); an ultra-long-range jet covers 674 (96%).

Standard planning cruise speeds and nonstop ranges for the six common business-jet categories, plus how many of our 702 analyzed routes each can fly nonstop.
| Category | Cruise speed | Nonstop range | Routes flyable nonstop (of 702) | Example aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Very Light Jet | 380 kts | 1,150 nm | 198 (28%) | Cessna Citation M2, Embraer Phenom 100 |
| Light Jet | 420 kts | 1,800 nm | 270 (38%) | Cessna Citation CJ3, Embraer Phenom 300 |
| Midsize Jet | 450 kts | 2,800 nm | 362 (52%) | Cessna Citation XLS, Hawker 900XP |
| Super-Midsize Jet | 490 kts | 3,600 nm | 394 (56%) | Cessna Citation Longitude, Bombardier Challenger 350 |
| Heavy Jet | 500 kts | 4,500 nm | 458 (65%) | Gulfstream G450, Bombardier Challenger 650 |
| Ultra-Long-Range Jet | 516 kts | 7,500 nm | 674 (96%) | Gulfstream G650ER, Bombardier Global 7500 |
What the 702 routes show
Coverage climbs steeply with cabin size. The smallest class (Very Light Jet) flies 198 routes nonstop (28%); each step up adds reach, and the Ultra-Long-Range class covers 674 of 702 (96%). Across all categories, 674 of 702 routes (96%) can be flown nonstop by at least one business-jet category.
28 routes exceed every category's nonstop reach. The longest is Santa Ana → Dubai at 7,248 nm (8,341 statute miles). Even the Ultra-Long-Range class, whose ~7,500 nm headline range leaves a planning nonstop reach of about 6,525 nm once reserves are applied, falls short — so this and 27 other long legs require a fuel stop or a tankered, lightly-loaded flight. The shortest route in the set is Miami → Miami at 7 nm.
Distance-band breakdown
| Band | Range | Routes | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short | under 1,000 nm | 198 | 28% |
| Medium | 1,000–3,000 nm | 194 | 28% |
| Long | 3,000–5,000 nm | 232 | 33% |
| Ultra | over 5,000 nm | 78 | 11% |
Methodology
Distances are great-circle (haversine) between airport coordinates from OurAirports (public domain). Cruise speeds and nonstop ranges are standard published planning figures for each aircraft category. A category counts as flying a leg “nonstop” when the great-circle distance is within its planning range allowing for fuel reserves (about 13% held back from the headline range). Flight times shown elsewhere on the site add a fixed overhead allowance to the cruise leg. Real-world range and block time vary with winds, payload, altitude, and routing — confirm any nonstop plan with your operator. Sample = 702 routes across 27 airports.
Frequently asked questions
How far can a private jet fly nonstop?
It depends on the size class. A light jet's planning range is about 1,800 nm; a midsize jet about 2,800 nm; a heavy jet about 4,500 nm; and an ultra-long-range jet about 7,500 nm. Usable nonstop reach is somewhat lower once fuel reserves are applied.
Which private jet has the longest range?
The Ultra-Long-Range category (for example the Gulfstream G650ER and Bombardier Global 7500) has the longest nonstop range at about 7,500 nm, and flies 674 of our 702 analyzed routes nonstop.
What's the longest route a private jet can't fly nonstop?
In our 702-route sample, 28 routes exceed every category's nonstop reach; the longest is Santa Ana to Dubai at 7,248 nm, which requires a fuel stop or a lightly-loaded long-range jet.
